Five incarcerated women rediscover a sense of purpose in life by participating in the prison's book club where they are serving their sentences. In an old chapel turned library, each one escapes through literature as they wait to regain their freedom. They are revealed to be supportive and cruel, laughing and engaged in turn. Until the reading of a novel threatens the existence of the club.
