From 1965 to 1968, the Second Grand Quintet – with Hancock, Carter, and Williams – produced some of the most daring music of the century. Composer Jean-Nicolas Trottier extended its legacy: from Shorter's melodic cells and rhythmic motifs, he built true jazz symphonies – not arrangements, but original works in dialogue with their source.
