In 1916, businessmen from Yorkshire in England organized public auditions to fill the ranks of a choir to perform The Passion According to St. Matthew. Dr. Henry Guthrie, back from a stay in Germany, was considered by some to lead the vocal ensemble. At the same time, several soldiers returned home, overwhelmed and wounded.
