In eighteen hundred something, in a fort on the outskirts of a reddish river, three women from very different backgrounds - Métis, English, and Ojibway - seek to find their place despite the little attention they receive in the history of a burgeoning Canada. Between exchanges about the world around them and intimate confidences, their conversations are marked by an inescapable question: love.
