In a famous 1975 article, Pier Paolo Pasolini laments the sudden disappearance of fireflies that are deserting the Italian countryside due to increased air pollution and the use of pesticides. This loss becomes for him a metaphor for the disappearance of the pre-war peasant and proletarian world and its ritual gestures, which are swept away by the cultural homogenization that accompanies the rise of consumerism.
