In the recently colonized Indies, a British officers infatuation with the daughter of a Brahmin fuels community tensions, against a backdrop of popular festivals and wild nature. Inspired by Pierre Loti, Léo Delibes implemented, in a daringly contemporary plot, the elements of orientalist opera: an impossible passion, the musical evocation of a distant civilization, the confrontation between religious fanaticism and sensuality.
